Comparing Different Types of Continuing Education for Teachers

Comparing Different Types of Continuing Education for Teachers

A while back, I posted about continuing education requirements and opportunities for teachers. Now, I’m going to talk about what I feel are the pros and cons of different types of Continuing Ed. What’s best for you really comes down to your learning style. Most people are auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners (or a combination of the above). Your personal learning style will weigh heavily on what form of continuing education is best for you.

Self-Study

Pros: Self study is a broad area. Most of what I have come across, is in the form of a book. You read the book, take a quiz, send in your answers, they send you a certificate. If you want to be able to go at your own pace, and have the book available to go back through when you are working on the quiz, this is a good choice. Books are also the way to go if you like to keep the books on your shelf for future reference.

There are a few books that I have read that are fabulous, such as “Raising Your Spirited Child”, by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka. This book is not one that has a quiz that can be sent in for a certificate. It is, however, worth reading! You will learn a lot about yourself, as well as the children in your care (or your own kids if you are a parent). I read it every couple years. Being able to keep a copy on your bookshelf of high quality books is a good thing!

If you are working in a child care setting, and are only looking for hours to meet state requirements, reading a book and writing a report on it may be an option. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, book reports are not accepted towards Clock Hour requirements for relicensing.

Another form of self-study is in the form of on-line courses. Online courses are available through some colleges or through companies such as the Professional Learning Board. Most of the courses have some interaction, drag and drop “Check Your Understanding” activities, quizzes, videos to watch, etc. Some courses have audio available. These fit with my learning style better than strictly text.

Cons: I am not a fast reader, and I often fall asleep reading. Self-study books are a good choice when I want to take my time, but not when I’m trying to keep trekking though information. For me, the content of the book also plays a role in how effective this type of study is. If I am reading new information that is well written, I am more engaged. If what I am reading re-hashes information I’ve already read about, I may struggle to get through it.

Workshops/Staff In-service Meetings

Pros: Workshops (at least the ones I have been to through the Appelbaum Training Institute) are fun, interactive, and definitely engaging! There’s something to be said for sitting with a group of other professionals who deal with the same day-to-day issues. Some of the people in the room have amazing ideas you can learn from, while others may learn something from you! Many of the speakers I have seen, mix personal experiences with humor. The personal/emotional connections are what make workshops among my favorite means of acquiring continuing education hours.

Most workshops I have been to, give out packets to take notes. PowerPoint slides, fill in the blanks, etc. may be included in those packets. This allows for several learning styles at once to be tapped into. Your brain is engaged through taking notes, you are listening, you are reading, your emotions are being tapped into…

Some staff in-service meetings may include training that will earn you continuing education hours. The advantage is that you are there with your peers. You are all learning the same thing, and can discuss how it directly applies to the children in your care or your classrooms.

Cons: Most workshops take up the better part of a day (or in some cases, multiple days), often on weekends. This can take up time that you would normally spend with your family. If you are a single parent, that is a pretty significant burden. There is also the unwritten cost of traveling to the workshop you are attending.

Mentoring

Mentoring student teachers is probably my favorite way of earning continuing education hours! It is not necessarily something you can ask for. Your supervisor must feel you are ready to take on the responsibility. Being asked to mentor a student is, in itself a huge honor! It is also a huge challenge. You must be on your top game at all times. There are small intricacies in what we do every day that we may not even realize. Student teachers are watching and pick …

Paramedic Refresher

Paramedic Refresher

In every medical practitioners there are regulations that need to be followed in order for you to become eligible with your chosen expertise. Every year or two years, you are more likely required to renew your licensed or certification, otherwise, you are not entitled to render medical services towards the people. Hence, paramedics are not included into this regulation.

According to US Department of Transportation, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) must recertify or renew a paramedic license or certification if an applicant has underwent a paramedic refresher classes or a continuing education. If not then he or she is not entitled for any paramedic license or certification renewal. The states carried out this regulation to protect and ensure the safety of every patient or victim. As a front liner of emergency medical situation, it is expected that you know the latest update of emergency procedure.

In most cases, refresher courses and continuing education are for paramedic re-certification purposes. The class usually takes 48 hours of theoretical concepts and 24 hours of continuing education. It covers the most up-to-date information about emergency medical concepts and principles. In some states classes have various topics to study for such as respiratory emergencies, communicable diseases, allergies and anaphylaxis emergencies, EMS operations, geriatric issues, trauma, and cardiovascular emergencies. Here are few refresher courses for paramedics:

1. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course.

At-Home Investigation

At-Home Investigation

Crime is everywhere. Whenever a new medium is created to help along business, crime will soon invade that new medium. With the advent of the internet, fraudulent criminals have found a whole new breeding ground for their dubious activities. Combining anonymity, home-security, and manipulating complex computer language in which the average person has no proficiency, criminals now have new, unchartered avenues to commit theft, identity theft, and fraud..

Because of this new phenomenon, an entire educational program within the field of investigation has become available in the online world. That is, these programs don’t merely train investigators to deal with online crime, but much of that very training is done online itself. This combination of medium and content is the most superior form of learning, because the future investigator is learning directly from experience, and is immediately placed in control of the tools that will be the tools of the trade.

There are many ways to apply investigative techniques with the use of computers and the internet. Two examples of these are computer crime and corporate crime.

Computer Crime

Computer crime, or cybercrime, has been in existence as long as computers have been the primary method of storing and transmitting sensitive data and information. Since the internet’s prevalence in communication, internet crime, or netcrime, has become a major problem for both individuals and businesses. Ranging in severity from mail spam and harassment to identity theft, illegal pornography and cyber warfare, the need for highly skilled cybercrime investigators is always growing. These professionals learn the technology and legal procedures surrounding the seizure and organization of digital evidence to help with criminal prosecutions. If one is investigating crime committed on computers and online, what better way to train for a job than by an online learning program?

Corporate Crime

Corporations have always been a difficult case regarding criminal liability, because depending on jurisdiction, corporations sometimes have and sometimes do not have the legal status of natural persons. Sometimes referred to as white-collar crime, this can also include organized crime and state crime. The need for specialists in this field is great because the victims are often not only individuals or other businesses, but society as a whole. One can easily see that because many corporations are multi-national with their information, business and assets spread over the globe, and the web, that a distance education program for professional investigators will put them squarely within the arena of these corporate criminals.

Because the days of criminals having to hide behind facemasks and braving real world law enforcement officers are somewhat a thing of the past, we need a new breed of investigators who meet criminals right in their own home turf. While they may sit at home and scour the web for victims, it is comforting to know that society’s investigators are able to learn from their own homes how to stop them.…

Dental Implant Continuing Education – Because Learning Is A Continuous Process

Dental Implant Continuing Education – Because Learning Is A Continuous Process

Education is the key to success. Yes, this is true, although some make it big even if they do not finish school. But if you will notice today, most successful people are those who have taken education and graduated a degree. Thus, no one should really ignore the significance of this no matter what your race is. However, there are some degrees that still require post-studies. Let’s take dentistry for example. If you have finished this degree and have passed the board exam, of course you are automatically called a certified dentist. But being a dentist does not end there. One should still take continuing education courses such as dental implant CE course.

Dental implants are among the highly in demand treatments of patients today. Why? Because these are both cost effective and offer a more permanent solution. However, before a patient undergoes a dental implant procedure, the dentist must first do preparation work. Also, there are lots of things to be checked beforehand such as the patient’s teeth structure. Now, if you still lack that confidence in doing this procedure, then all the more you need to take dental implant CE course. Some universities offer this course whereas one can view the procedure via computer assisted planning. Here, a 3D visual planning of cutting-edge bone regeneration procedures is presented, which is of big help so you can clearly see how everything is done. But if you want a more thorough discussion, well you can always opt for one-on-one session. Some dentists choose this option because they get to ask questions directly and the focus is on one student alone.

Now, where to begin your search for these continuing education courses? Well, you’ve got two options – you can either do the hard way or the easy way. The hard way is hopping from one university to another to inquire personally what dental ce courses they are offering. When you choose this option, you’ve got to allot at least a day to visit all the universities you are considering. This is, of course, time consuming and exhausting, so you might want to consider the second option which is the easy way. Here, all you have to do is to log on the Internet and search for websites that provide a list of universities and institutions offering these courses. This is a more convenient option since you can do this even at the comfort of your home or office and at any time you want.…

The Logical Mind, Running Guard Role In Healing

The Logical Mind, Running Guard Role In Healing

In the vast scope of practice in which every manual therapy is lumped under the massage therapy genre, it is interesting to note how the logical mind often times gets in the way of healing. Its prevalent these days to hear the axiom, “Where your mind goes, your body follows.” Or, “so as you think shall it be.” Essentially, the wisdom that has been passed down over the ages, is the importance of the mind and how you focus on its ability to assist in the healing process. If you think when you journey through the door of an “alternative” therapist that “this shit couldn’t possibly be working”, its my belief it probably won’t work at the level needed to expedite the healing process. You have had to have your head stuck in the sand of the 13th century to have not heard of the placebo effect! Who cares how the outcome is reached, all we care about as massage therapists is getting our clients on the road to wellness, which in most instances, is a pain free condition. The mind can be a dangerous thing. When was the last time a student in a massage continuing education class was taught the importance of using words to encourage the healing process and correct a client if their story revolved too much about their condition, as if the condition was an old friend whose companionship gave them a story to share about their journey.

Conditioning plays a huge role in how we view the healing process. I know of a client whose pain originated in the attachment area of the rectus femoris and caused a constantly nagging pain that wasn’t responding to pharmaceuticals or classical physical therapy. Trigger point injections were unsuccessful in dealing with the pain as well. When she finally arrived at the massage therapist’s office who was versed in Rolfing/Structural Integration, she was desperate for relief since the pain was interfering with her sleep. Her husband was a well respected surgeon who asked her after her first visit to the rolfer’s office, if she was cured? And that my friends is God’s honest truth. CURED! So you can see how what we are exposed to, forms our viewpoints concerning the viability or lack of when it comes to different forms of massage therapy techniques.

Have you ever been asked in a massage continuing education class how you approach the client with their expectations? Have you ever set boundaries so that the client is well aware of the reality concerning their challenge? Dr. Rolf left a 10 session series for her practitioners that some idiotically accused her of creating nothing more than a marketing ploy. What fools. Imagine this, if you have been on the planet 30 years (adjust the math accordingly for your age) you have been moving in gravitational forces for 250,000 hours. Needless to say the physical, emotional and environmental vectors that have entered your system over that period of time have probably had an influence on the condition that your clients have presented to you. Its worth taking the time to educate them that what they are presenting didn’t happen over night, even though it may have appeared to “just happened” and it probably ain’t going away in one hour, Hallelujah! The ten session series of Rolfing allowed for 10-15 hours of work to change the structure in gravity and hopefully eliminate the painful condition presented to the therapist, by balancing the structure. Once someone commits to the series of 10 or more sessions their is a realistic understanding of what it will take to accomplish their goals and a willingness to accept that massage technique as one that has validity for them in surmounting their challenge. They have enrolled their minds and focused positively on the potential outcome.. That’s what I call getting out of the way of the logical mind and using the power of clear intention. It works, just ask Mr. Placebo!…

Deploying Enrolled Agent CPE in the Collection Appeals Process

Deploying Enrolled Agent CPE in the Collection Appeals Process

When a conclusion derived by a taxpayer differs from the IRS position, the collection appeals process is a likely resolution channel. Enrolled agent continuing education provides a thorough understanding of tax subjects needed to assist individual taxpayers.

The collection appeals forum is independent of other IRS departments. It is an informal avenue available to any taxpayer who disagrees with an IRS determination. A taxpayer is permitted to have representation by an enrolled agent. This is especially valuable when presenting an argument about a tax position requires the knowledge obtained from meeting enrolled agent continuing education requirements.

The appeals process is designed to settle tax disputes without having to reply upon the court system. Any taxpayer receiving a notice from the IRS may consult with an enrolled agent to explore the availability of using appeals resolution. In most cases, this option is permitted to recipients of tax notices. The collection appeals process is available to a taxpayer receiving a Notice of Federal Tax Lien, Notice of Levy, Notice of Seizure, or Denial or Termination of Installment Agreement.

An appeals conference is a hearing that requires a taxpayer or enrolled agent representative to present an explanation of the reason for disagreement with the IRS. A taxpayer may take a position that the IRS incorrectly interpreted the law or improperly applied a law due to a misunderstanding of facts. In either event, the details covered in tax CPE are critically important to presenting a supportable appeals position.

A taxpayer choosing the collection appeals process must forgo the option of subsequently seeking relief from the courts. Before matters are eligible for the appeals process, an unresolved tax matter must be discussed first with an IRS collections manager.

Form 9423 is completed for a collection appeals request. This must occur within two days of a conference with a collections manager. By this point, taxpayers have usually deployed the services of a tax professional to offer a solution to the collections manager. Therefore, enrolled agent CPE is utilized to help taxpayers soon after receiving IRS notices and onward through the appeals process.
